With sadness and regret, the Embassy of Belgium has learned about last week-end’s incidents at the Lierse-Beerschot football match. The Embassy strongly condemns the insensitive and provocative behavior of some Beerschot fans vis-à-vis Mr. Eiji Kawashima, the goalkeeper of SK Lierse and of the Japanese national football team. The Embassy wishes to stress the fact that these fans represent only a minor fraction of the large crowds which attend and enjoy football games on a regular basis in Belgium. Furthermore, the Embassy notes that the leadership of the Beerschot club has immediately voiced its unequivocal disapproval of last week-end’s events, stating “that its supporters’ behaviour had been hurtful and totally inappropriate”. The club management further called for calm and invited the football authorities to handle such incidents and provocations in a firm and consistent manner. The Embassy of Belgium in Tokyo reaffirms its strong condemnation of last week-end’s events and has duly informed the Belgian authorities as well as the Belgian football federation of the strong negative impact of the incidents on the Japanese people’s feelings and of the bereaved population of Tohoku in particular.

を受け、ベルギー大使館はここに悲しみと遺憾の意を表します。一部ベールスホ
ットサポーターによる日本代表・ＳＫリエーセゴールキーパー川島永嗣氏に対す
る心無い挑発的な行動を強く非難いたします。
しかしながら、これらの者がベルギーで日頃サッカーの試合を楽しむ大勢の中の
わずかに過ぎないという事実を強調させていただきます。
さらに、当大使館の知るところでは、ベールスホットのクラブ首脳部は、即座に
「これらサポーターの行動は人を深く傷つけるもので全く不適切なものであっ
た」と先週末の事件への明白な非難を表明しました。クラブ経営陣はさらに、冷
静さを呼びかけ、しっかりと一貫性を持ってこのような事件や挑発行為に対応す
ることをサッカー協会に求めました。
在東京ベルギー大使館は先週末の事件への強い非難の意をここに改めて表し、本
事件が、日本国民の感情、特に東北地域の遺族の方々の感情に、強い否定的な影
響を与えたことを、ベルギーサッカー連盟を含むベルギー当局に正式に通知いた
